The campaign to build a new Lloyd F. Moss Free Clinic made a major leap forward with a $2 million donation by Silver Companies founder Carl D. Silver. Not only did Silver's gift represent the largest cash pledge by an individual, but it also helped the fundraising campaign reach more than 90 percent of its goal.

The hospital foundation set a goal of $10 million to build, furnish and equip a new building and to create a permanent fund to support the operation. In recognition of his gift, the new two-story building will be named the Carl D. Silver Health Center. At 16,000 square feet of finished space, it will be the largest of Virginia's 47 free clinics.

Silver was a longtime member of the hospital foundation board and also donated the land on State Route 3 for the Cancer Center of Virginia.

"I do not believe that any contribution that I have given is more worthy than the one to Moss Free Clinic," Silver said.

It has been our honor and pleasure to participate in many cooperative efforts that benefit the communities in which we do business. From the start, we have always felt a desire to give back, and as Silver Companies has expanded to become a national company, our participation in charitable programs has also grown.

Silver Foundation has helped build community centers, medical facilities, adoptive care homes and a camp where a critically-ill child can build self esteem and participate in activities he or she never before dreamed possible. The foundation also has created special projects such as the distribution of holiday care packages to orphans and the elderly, and Silver Companies employees enthusiastically participate in numerous charity fundraisers and functions. After the devastation of Hurricane Katrina in 2005, Silver Foundation saw to the immediate collection and distribution of aid and supplies before most agencies could even make it to the scene.

In the words of founder Carl D. Silver, “As far as helping people from a charitable point of view, that's something we believe in. That's what we do. We practice that. We always have practiced that.”

"Anytime that you can get a company like Silver to come in... it makes it easier to go to other people... I think they jump-started a lot of [giving]."
