Grading and some preliminary construction are scheduled to begin soon at the Celebrate Alabama development site in Opelika.
Clearing of the 535-acre site and roadway construction will begin “within days,” according to Terra Mortensen, public relations director for Silver Companies, the project’s developer based in Florida and Virginia.
“We are working out the final details of the construction contract and getting our permits from the Corps of Engineers,” Mortensen said.
Celebrate Alabama will span property near Interstate 85 between Exits 64 and 66 in Opelika. The project is expected to have retail stores, restaurants, hotels, a 100,000-square-foot expo center, a music hall and a five-screen, drive-in theater.

The businesses and other elements for Celebrate Alabama are expected to be built over the next 10 years. When complete, the development is expected to add about 5,000 jobs to the area.
No date has been set for an official groundbreaking for Celebrate Alabama, Mortensen said.
